The Honolulu Brass is the premier brass quintet in the state of Hawaii, last season celebrating its 40th anniversary as a chamber music group. The Honolulu Brass performs a wide repertoire of classic and contemporary music in various venues throughout the state. All are members of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra (HSO).
Kenneth Hafner, Trumpet
Ken’s music studies included undergraduate work at the State University of New York and graduate studies at Indiana University; he holds a Master’s degree from Northwestern University. He has performed as a member of the trumpet section of the HSO and predecessor Honolulu Symphony for more than 20 years and has been with Chamber Music Hawaii for most of those 20 years. His performing experience includes work with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under direction of Michael Tilson Thomas and with the Maui Symphony.
JoAnn Lamolino, Trumpet
JoAnn holds a trumpet position with the HSO and performs with orchestras and as soloist throughout the East Coast. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from Boston University and Master’s degree from Manhattan School of Music. As a chamber musician, JoAnn has performed with the New York Philharmonic, Metropolitan Orchestra and Athena Brass Band. She was a member of the Charleston Symphony Orchestra for two years prior to coming to Honolulu.
Julia Filson, Horn
Julia is a member of the HSO and teaches at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (UHManoa). Prior to this, Julia was a member of Gaudete Brass where she was in residence at Roosevelt University and recorded with Cedille records. Other engagements include CSO MusicNOW series, Ensemble Dal Niente, Lucerne Festival, Ravinia Festival. She received her Bachelor of Music from Indiana University, and Master of Music with Distinction in Horn Performance from DePaul University.
Jason Byerlotzer, Trombone
A member of the Honolulu Brass Quintet since 2009, Jason is Principal Trombonist for HSO, a position he has held since 2008. He is Lecturer of Trombone at UHManoa and low brass instructor at the Punahou School. Jason received his Bachelor of Music from San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music. Before coming to Honolulu, Jason held positions with the Colorado Springs Symphony, San Antonio Symphony and the Cleveland Opera.
Rudi Hoehn, Bass Trombone
Rudi Hoehn is Acting Principal Bass Trombone with HSO, Principal Bass Trombone with the Santa Barbara Symphony, lecturer of brass at UH Manoa, and also performs with Honolulu Opera Theatre. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from California State University at Sacramento and Masters of Music from the Julliard School. He has performed widely with symphonies throughout the country, recorded Charles Ives’ Symphony No. 4 with the Seattle Symphony, and is on the soundtracks of numerous videogames.
