Honolulu Brass Quintet

Since its inception in 1976, the Honolulu Brass Quintet has been in demand throughout Honolulu and the state of Hawai‘i for all kinds of special occasions ranging from church services to private parties, from graduations to in-school performances. As one of three ensembles that make up Chamber Music Hawai‘i, the quintet continues to play full length brass quintet performances in Honolulu, in Palikū Theatre on the Windward side, and at University of Hawai‘i West Oahu on the Leeward side. All of its members are full-time professional musicians who perform regularly as members of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra, providing the highest level of musical artistry to the state of Hawai‘i.

Galliard String Quartet

Fueled by passion and sometimes coffee, the Galliard String Quartet’s romance for the music of Beethoven, Brahms, Schubert, Shostakovich, and many others is unparalleled. Founded in 1982, the Galliard is known throughout the islands for their uncompromising commitment to performing classical music of the highest caliber. All four members of the present Galliard quartet are members of the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra and are also seasoned teachers and music educators in the community.

Recent highlights and collaborations include acclaimed pianist Wu Han, conductor and silent film historian Rick Benjamin, Onium Ballet, Hawai‘i Vocal Arts Ensemble and Chaminade University, and composer Jon Magnussen.

Spring Wind Quintet

The Spring Wind Quintet performs concerts and educational services throughout Hawai‘i, nationally and internationally. Repertoire includes contemporary, pops, and Hawaiian music, plus the standard classics. Interest in new music and world music has inspired the creation of several original works and numerous new arrangements. Collaborating with their string, brass, and keyboard colleagues in Chamber Music Hawai‘i, the Spring Wind Quintet has performed and also commissioned many works for expanded and mixed instrumentation. The quintet’s work with Hawaiian artists led to a Grammy nomination in 2013 (“Malama Ko Aloha”) and a Nā Hōkū Hanohono nomination in 2016 (“Paka’a Lanakila!”). Spring Wind Quintet is a recipient of grants from Chamber Music America’s Ensemble Residency program and from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Tresemble

Chamber Music Hawai‘i coined this new word to describe its combined ensemble of mixed instrumentation drawing from all three of the resident ensembles. Tresemble concerts can program many great pieces of chamber music that do not fit into one of the typical categories. We even bring in guest musicians, such as pianists, harpists or vocalists to perform this often neglected repertoire. Sometimes a Tresemble concert uses a larger group of musicians to perform works such as Mozart’s Grand Partita for winds, Dvorak’s Serenade, or Stravinsky’s L’Histoire du Soldat.
